Recall Roundup: Toasters, Swing Sets, Cat Food and More

  • Hamilton Beach recalled 300,000 toasters because the heating elements can remain energized and could ignite if an item is placed in the toaster, creating a fire hazard, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Hamilton Beach has received 15 reports of toasters that didn't pop-up as intended, including three reports of minor damage to kitchen cabinets. So far, no one has been hurt. Included in the recall are the company's classic chrome two-slice toasters (Model no. 22600) with series codes that begin with the letters C or D, and have the format of CXXXXBI or DXXXXBI, where XXXX is a four-digit number ranging from 0190 through 5290. The model number and series code are printed on the bottom of the toaster. The toaster has a chromed steel exterior, a front control panel with a rotary toast shade selector and function buttons arranged in an arc, a front removable crumb tray and Hamilton Beach printed across the front of the toaster. Consumers should call Hamilton Beach for a new toaster at (800) 379-2200.


  • Adventure Playsets recalled about 240,000 of its wooden swing sets sold at Walmart, Toys R Us and other stores nationwide between 2004 and 2007 because the posts in the fort section can rot and weaken, creating a fall hazard, the CPSC said. The company has received more than 500 complaints about the weakened wood in the plastic-coated uprights and one report of a fall when the ladder failed, resulting in bruises and scratches. The recalled swing sets come with swings, slides and ladders. Each set has a fort that uses green or cranberry plastic-coated 2- x 4-inch wood upright posts and a green nylon fabric-covered shade. The sets were sold under the following names: Bellevue, Bellevue II, Belmont, Durango, Durango II, Sedona, Tacoma, Tacoma II, Ventura, Venture II and Yukon. The name is printed on the manufacturer's instructions that came with the swing set. The CPSC lists the model numbers on its web site. The agency said the company recalled a number of these products in 2009 for a similar issue. Consumers should call Adventure Playsets for a replacement kit at (877) 840-9068 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST or e-mail the company.
  • Nestle Purina PetCare Co. recalled 870 bags of dry cat food sold in three states because it may be contaminated with salmonella.
  • Consumer complaints of a foul, moldy odor prompted McNeil Consumer Healthcare to recall almost 61,000 bottles of Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets in 225-count bottles.
  • Topson Downs recalled 2,100 Bar III women's dresses sold in the Impulse Department at Macy's nationwide because they don't meet federal flammability standards, the CPSC said. The recalled dresses have a checkered, multi-colored, and black pattern called "Mint Chili Combo" and are fully lined with a sheer rayon outer layer. They were sold at Macy's stores and online from March 2011 through May 2011 for about $60. Consumers should return them to the store. U.S. Senate Passes Unemployment Extension

The U.S. Senate passed a bill which had a provision for renewed unemployment extension benefits.  Florida's U.S. Senator Bill Nelson voted for the bill while Senator Marco Rubio voted against the bill. Following his vote against H.R. 2055, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012, Senator Marco Rubio issued the following statement: “This massive 1,200-plus page bill represents everything that is wrong with Washington.
